SUMMARY:EXHIBITION On Screen 2018/19 Season: Van Gogh & Japan
DESCRIPTION:To Purchase Tickets Click HERE \n“I envy the Japanese” Van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo. In the exhibition on which this film is based – VAN GOGH & JAPAN at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam – one can see why. Though Vincent van Gogh never visited Japan it is the country that had the most profound influence on him and his art. One cannot understand Van Gogh without understanding how Japanese art arrived in Paris in the middle of the 19th century and the profound impact it had on artists like Monet\, Degas and\, above all\, Van Gogh. \nVisiting the new galleries of Japanese art in Paris and then creating his own image of Japan – through in-depth research\, print collecting and detailed discussions with other artists – Van Gogh’s encounter with Japanese artworks gave his work a new and exciting direction. After leaving Paris for the south of France – to what he thought of as near to a kind of Japan as he could find – the productive and yet troubled years that followed must all be seen in the context of Van Gogh bending Japanese influences to his will and defining himself as a modern artist with clear Asian precursors. In this little known story of Van Gogh’s art we see just how important his study of Japan was. The film travels not only to France and the Netherlands but also to Japan to further explore the remarkable heritage that so affected Van Gogh and made him the artist we know of today.

SUMMARY:American Heretics: The Politics of the Gospel
DESCRIPTION:Q&A with director Catherine Butler \nTo Purchase Tickets Click HERE \nAmerican Heretics: The Politics of the Gospel takes audiences into the buckle of Bible belt where a group of defiant Oklahomans are rising up to challenge deeply rooted fundamentalist Christian doctrine. Labeled as “heretics” for their beliefs and actions\, they refuse to wield their faith as a sword sharpened by literal interpretations of the Bible. Especially those interpretations that continue to justify nationalism and hack away at landmark civil rights protections for women\, minorities\, immigrants\, and the LGBTQ communities. These American Heretics are still interested in saving you from hell\, but it’s the earthly one\, where poverty\, discrimination and nationalism oppress those “who are the least among us.” \nDirected and Produced by Emmy Award-winning filmmakers Jeanine and Catherine Butler; edited by award-winning editor Jamie Lee Godfrey (National Geographic\, Newseum); and lensed by Peter Hutchens (Showtime’s “The Trade\,” and Oprah Winfrey’s “Belief” series).

SUMMARY:ZZ TOP: That Little Ol Band From Texas
DESCRIPTION:Produced by the Emmy award-winning Banger Films\, ZZ TOP: THAT LITTLE OL’ BAND FROM TEXAS tells the story of how three oddball teenage bluesmen – Billy Gibbons\, Dusty Hill\, and Frank Beard – became one of the biggest\, most beloved bands on the planet\, all while maintaining a surrealist mystique that continues to intrigue fans and entice onlookers 50 years after the band’s inception. \nBuoyed by candid band interviews\, never-before-seen archive\, animation\, celebrity fan testimonials (Billy Bob Thornton\, Joshua Homme and more)\, and an intimate performance at the legendary Gruene Hall shot exclusively for this documentary\, “That Little Ol’ Band” runs the gamut\, from the absurd to the poignant\, from squalid Texas bars to MTV heroics\, all in celebration of this notoriously private\, but larger than life\, power trio. In the end\, ZZ TOP: THAT LITTLE OL’ BAND FROM TEXAS unravels the extraordinary tale of a band whose image we know\, but whose story we don’t.
